Adrian
a3
Medium: Coal, coloured pencils, gold marker
April 2011
About: I am a huge fan of Floortje Zwigtman's books about Adrian Mayfield, and have of course been wanting to portray the characters many times, however have never had a proper idea.
I got help from the supercreative:
[link] she gave me the idea to use a green carnation, which was the sumbol used by homosexuals in the 1800 century when the book takes place.
Modelling as Adrian I have chosen the beautiful Cesarr Terrio
[link]who I think has the beauty, the softness, the emotion to be Adrian.
Finally, the blindfold in front of the green carnation symbolizes the struggle in blind to find his way in life, not least with his sexuality.
No room for interpretations on this, lol

UPDATE: I got a reply from Floortje when I showed her the drawing:
Hi Christina!
May I be honest?
I LOVE it! I absolutely love it!
Not only is it the closest match to Adrian as I imagine him, it is also a very interesting work of art, a beautiful play with colors (or the lack of them), a good composition and a funny trick with the green carnation that is held like a sigarette.
Love, Floortje.
I am SO HAPPY she liked it, I can't even begin to describe it! Wow, to have her actually think it looks like Adrian as she imagined him - she is after all the only one who really KNOWS what he looks like. It's insane. Wow, I am so, so honoured
